Sterling is a former football wide receiver and NFL Network commentator. He attended the University of South Carolina and played with the Green Bay Packers from 1988 to 1994, his career cut short by a neck injury.
Sterling and his younger brother, Shannon Sharpe, were born in Chicago, Illinois, to Pete Sharpe and Mary Alice Dixon.
He grew up in Glennville, Georgia, with his grandparents and brothers, including his younger brother.
The former footballer attended Glennville High School, where he played quarterback, running back, and linebacker, as well as track, and basketball.
He achieved school records as a wide receiver at the University of South Carolina, with 169 career catches, 2,497 receiving yards, and a since-broken record of 17 career touchdowns.
Sterling also established the school record for single-season receiving touchdowns with 11, which was surpassed in 2005 by Sidney Rice. His No. 2 jersey was retired by South Carolina after the 1987 regular season, making him only the second Gamecock to receive this distinction while still on the field.
He worked as an analyst for the NFL Network after retiring from the NFL.
